Collection: Exercise Mats

Exercise mats are bought for comfort, grip and floor protection during stretching, core work, mobility and bodyweight training. If you searched for mats for exercise, compare thickness, surface texture and how easy the mat is to clean.

For heavier equipment areas, exercise mats are different from permanent gym flooring; choose the one that matches how the space will be used.

The range

Exercise mats listed on this page cover several different use cases. The listings break down into home gear packages, exercise mats, medicine balls & exercise balls, treadmills and related items. Brands in this category include Active, LivePro and UBench.

Exercise mats suit home setups and small studios in particular. Where a listing is borderline for your use, the specification on the product page usually settles it — and if it does not, ask us.

What to compare

Exercise mats decisions come down to duty rating, fit and how long you expect to keep them.

Surface texture decides whether it stays put under load — anything that slides underfoot is worse than nothing at all.
Size and weight should suit the smallest as well as the strongest user, particularly for anything thrown, swung or carried.
Check how it stores. Rolled, hung or stacked makes a real difference in a room that has another purpose during the day.
Stitching and seam quality are the usual failure point on fabric and rubber goods, well before the material itself wears out.
Warranty and parts availability matter more than headline specification once equipment is a few years old.

Which grade you need

Exercise mats listed on this page cover more than one duty rating. A home-rated unit used commercially will normally fall outside its intended use, which is worth checking before buying for a business. Studios sitting between home and commercial use are often best served by the top of the home range rather than the bottom of the commercial one.

Space and setup

Exercise mats need less space than most gym equipment, though the training area around them still matters. Natural light and ventilation change how often a space actually gets used, which is worth as much as the equipment choice. Leave clearance around the equipment for the movement itself, which is usually more than the footprint implies. Mirrors help with form on anything technical and are cheap relative to the equipment they sit alongside.

Pricing in this range

Exercise mats here range from R180 for the smallest items up to R139 396 for complete packages, and the typical listing sits near R891. The gap between the two ends is almost entirely build quality and duty rating rather than features, so it is worth being honest about how hard the equipment will actually be worked.

Looking after it

Exercise mats rarely fail suddenly — they degrade slowly, and most of that is preventable. Check elastic and rubber goods for nicks and thinning before each use. They fail suddenly rather than gradually, usually under tension. Note the model and serial number somewhere safe — sourcing the right replacement part is much easier with it than without. Rubber and foam perish with prolonged UV exposure, so keep equipment out of direct sun where you can.
