Collection: Wattbike Indoor Bikes
Wattbike is the performance end of indoor cycling and the reference machine for structured, power-based training. We stock the Wattbike Trainer, Wattbike Air Pro, Wattbike Air Pro High and Wattbike Atom X in South Africa.
What makes a Wattbike different from a spin bike
The distinction that matters is measurement. A Wattbike measures power directly rather than estimating it from speed, cadence or a resistance setting. Most indoor bikes infer wattage from a formula; a Wattbike reads it.
That sounds like a technical detail and it is not. If your training is built around zones, FTP testing, prescribed wattage intervals or any protocol where the number has to mean the same thing today as it did last month, estimated power is not good enough. Two spin bikes set to the same resistance level do not deliver the same load, and the same bike does not deliver the same load as its pads wear. A direct-measurement bike removes that variable entirely.
This is why Wattbikes are standard in sports science testing, cycling team setups, performance laboratories and rehabilitation settings where load has to be prescribed precisely — and why they are overspecified for someone who just wants to ride hard three times a week.
Choosing between the Wattbike models
The Air Pro models use air resistance. Resistance scales with how hard you pedal, which makes them self-scaling across a mixed group and well suited to conditioning work, group settings and gym floors where different riders use the same bike back to back. The Air Pro High is the taller-frame variant — check rider height requirements before ordering.
The Atom X is the connected smart trainer. Resistance is controlled electronically, which means structured workouts and virtual platforms can drive the bike directly rather than asking you to chase a target manually. If your training happens inside a training app or a virtual platform, this is the model built for it.
The Wattbike Trainer is the long-standing testing and training platform — the one most often specified where repeatable measurement is the primary requirement rather than connected content.
Who Wattbike suits
Wattbike buyers are cyclists and triathletes training to structured plans, sports science and performance facilities, cycling clubs and teams, rehabilitation and cardiac practices where load must be prescribed, and gyms positioning themselves on performance rather than volume.
If you want indoor cycling without the measurement, the wider spinning bikes and cycles range covers studio and home spin options at a fraction of the cost, and exercise bikes covers upright and recumbent alternatives for general fitness. Being direct about it: most people do not need a Wattbike, and the ones who do already know why. For app-guided home training rather than power testing, Yesoul covers the connected end at a domestic price.
Setting up an indoor cycling space
Indoor cycling generates heat and sweat in concentrated quantities. Plan for airflow before you plan for anything else — a fan is not optional in a South African summer, and sweat is corrosive enough to shorten the life of most indoor bikes if it is allowed to sit on the frame.
Protect the floor underneath. See gym flooring and exercise mats for the surface, both for the bike and for the slab beneath it.
Confirm rider height and inseam ranges against the model before ordering, particularly with the Air Pro High, and allow clearance behind the bike for mounting and dismounting rather than just the frame footprint.
Common questions
Can I use a Wattbike with a virtual training platform? The Atom X is the model built for that, with electronically controlled resistance that a platform can drive directly. The air models broadcast data but do not take resistance commands.
Is a Wattbike worth it for a home gym? Only if your training is structured around power numbers. If you ride for general fitness, a good spin bike gives you the same workout for far less money, and the honest advice is to buy one.
Do they need calibration? Direct measurement is the point — there is no resistance setting to calibrate against. Follow the maintenance schedule for the model and the numbers stay comparable year to year.
